Event Details

This is a 3 day course, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm daily, with a break for lunch.  Continental breakfast and a full lunch are provided.

Benefits of Attending

Learn About the Requirements for ASME, Part UHX Heat Exchangers
Through step-by-step instruction, learn how to develop an efficient design process as well as how to avoid common mistakes. Learn how to apply your skills by working through example problems using COMPRESS, industry's leading vessel and exchanger design software. Required software and hardware will be provided during the seminar.

Learn From a Leading Heat Exchanger Expert
Our instructor, Don Kurle P.E., has over 30 years of exchanger design experience and 6 years of fabrication experience. The majority of Don's experience is with fixed tubesheet and U-tube exchangers.  He has also worked with floating tubesheet exchangers.  Don's design experience ranges from small Division 1 pipe in pipe exchangers to Division 2 exchangers over 25 feet in diameter. He is currently a member of the ASME Heat Transfer Equipment (Section VIII) Committee, the External Pressure Committee and the Subgroup on Toughness (SC II & SC VIII).

Earn CEUs to Meet Your P.E. Continuing Education Requirement
Codeware has been reviewed and approved as an Authorized Provider by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). Codeware will award 2.4 CEUs to participants who successfully complete this course.

Who Should Attend

This is an introductory course designed for individuals with little prior ASME, Part UHX heat exchanger design experience or those wishing to update their knowledge. It is recommended that participants be familiar with COMPRESS before attending this seminar.

What You Will Learn

Heat Exchanger Basics

  • Become familiar with the different types of heat exchangers and their functional descriptions.
  • Gain exposure to the various types of shell and tube heat exchangers and the common nomenclature of their components.

The Mechanical Design Process

  • Understand the interaction between process design, thermal design, Codes and Standards and customer specifications.
  • Learn what information is required from each resource to complete the design of a heat exchanger.

The Mechanical Design of a Heat Exchanger

  • Learn how to design a typical heat exchanger by working though a step-by-step process. The source of data, design methodology and results will be discussed for each step.

How ASME Part UHX and TEMA Compare

  •  Learn why the ASME rules for tubesheet design were developed.
  • Understand the underlying philosophies of both ASME and TEMA regarding design rule development.

ASME, Part UHX

  • Become familiar with the Part UHX rules for U-tube, fixed and floating tubesheets through step-by-step examples.
  • Learn how selected variables and component modifications affect the final heat exchanger design.

Typical Design Problems and Solutions

  • Learn how to design heat exchangers that avoid common life cycle problems.
  • Reduce theory to practice by reviewing select design problems and possible solutions.

Hands-On Use of COMPRESS

  • COMPRESS will be used throughout the course to demonstrate the application of the design rules.
